Our Club - Mar 2024

Our plans for an Open Day on 20 April are gearing up – and we’re hoping that many of you will be able to join us to support the club and celebrate the start of the spring / summer tennis season!  This year we continue to evolve our fabulous programme of club tennis, competition and coaching on offer at BTC and we would love to inspire everyone to get involved in as much tennis as possible, as often as possible.  Make sure you make the most of it and if there's something you want in our programme that you don't see then please tell us!

open day

You should have received an email giving details of our Open Day on Saturday 20 April which is a great opportunity for existing members to mingle and welcome in the new tennis season, but also engage the broader community in what we offer as a club and why tennis is a great sport for everyone.

All the details for the day are on a new Open Day page on our website and, if you can attend, then it’s helpful to register so that we have some idea of numbers.  If you can volunteer time to help us prepare for the event, either before or on the day then please email me on This email address is being protected from spambots. Please join us – it's a great occasion to come together as a club community!

 Dawn2

our committee

I’m really delighted that Dawn Dickinson has stepped into the role of Secretary, and has already joined her first Committee meeting!  Anyone who knows Dawn will recognise the positivity and energy she brings to everything she gets involved in and we’re really looking forward to feeling the benefit of that!

Dawn's appointment means that David Howells will (finally!) step down from the Committee.  David – we will miss you but huge thanks for everything you’ve done in your 10+ years as Secretary!

our tennis programme

As our winter club season ends, I wanted to recognise and give a BIG THANK YOU to the amazing group of people who run our winter rota sessions.  Over 80 of our members enjoy the winter rotas which provide a helpful impetus to keep us playing (and enjoying!) our tennis through the cold and wet winter evenings.

So please join me in celebrating Stewart  Pitteway, Michael Perry, John Malaiperuman, Sarah Cooper and Paul Jackson for volunteering their time to allow so many members to enjoy tennis throughout the winter.  THANK YOU!!

A reminder that the ‘normal’ timetable of evening club sessions recommence on Tuesday 2 April, with courts booked from 6.00pm (Tuesdays) or 6.30pm (Thursdays) until 10pm for club doubles and an opportunity to meet other club members.  Join in if you can!

League practice is on Friday nights from 6.30pm and with no Friday matches through April, it's a great opportunity to see if league is for you.  Our Captains would love to see you there!

AND finally, we are fortunate to have a top-notch coaching programme for adults and juniors at all playing levels with a team of brilliant LTA accredited coaches – why not take advantage?

let's get digital!

It's a fact of life now that using social media to help promote our club is important for increasing our visibility, engaging the broader community and showing who we are and what we have to offer.

I know it's not everyone's 'thing' but, if you can, we would love you to connect to our new club Facebook Page and/or Instagram which have been set up to complement our existing Backwell Tennis Members Facebook Group.  By doing so you can keep in touch with what’s going on around the club but also do your bit to promote us by following, liking and sharing content.  Thank you!

Thanks to you who gave us photos of your tennis through March as part of our ‘We Are Our Club’ promotion to celebrate and share all the types of tennis we play at Backwell.  Please keep taking and sending photos through – gratefully received at This email address is being protected from spambots. Drop Shots...

A big thank you to Leo Kaboutian for replacing the clock in the clubhouse – finally we know what the actual time is!

Farewell to Michael Trevelyan who through injury has had to give up playing tennis – in Michael’s words ‘I have enjoyed playing at Backwell enormously over the past 16 years & only regret I didn’t start playing until I was 65!  Please pass my thanks to all the players who have made my time at BTC so enjoyable.’

Play Your Way To Wimbledon comes to Backwell Tennis Club on 2 April giving our juniors an opportunity to follow their heroes and compete for the title at Wimbledon.  Sign up by sending a message to Tom Jackson (details in the clubhouse).  Come and support our juniors if you can!

Membership renewals are due by 1 April!!  Thank you to those who have already renewed.
